James and the Giant Peach, Episode 9

I was laughing out loud at Taika Waititi's reading of this episode of James and the Giant Peach.  The book is almost done and this section, I would say, is the climax of the book.  Sit tight.  The situation is going to get very serious for James and his friends.

James and the Giant Peach, Episode 7

Yo-Yo Ma, arguably the greatest cellist of our time, plays the old green grasshopper in this episode.  He serenades us just as the grasshopper does to James and the other creatures. This episode is not only entertaining, but simply a beautiful collection of entertainers creating art.

What's Going On In the World?

It is difficult to understand everything that is going on in the world right now.  Hopefully, everyone in our school community is safe and happy at home.  There are many people in the world, however, who are putting themselves in harms way for an issue that they believe strongly they must fight for.

As a librarian, it is my responsibility to present the diversity that exists in our world through books. So, please take the time to choose a few books on this choice board to read and enjoy.

New Book From Eric Walters

Eric Walters writes a junior novel about this global pandemic.  He says,

I felt compelled to write this middle-grade novel to help young people see the world they have         suddenly found themselves living in, to let them know they are not alone, to foster understanding, and help them in these difficult times.  I think my novel has a role to play in providing young readers with context, calm and a sense of hope.

Thirteen-year-old Quinn and her friends can't believe their luck when spring break is extended an extra two weeks-even if it's because of some virus.  But when the impact of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic becomes apparent, everybody, not just the students, has to learn to adjust to the new reality.  Quinn's father is an ER doctor and has to self-isolate to protect his family from the virus.  Isaac's mother is the chief of police and now has to enforce new physical-distancing bylaws.  Reese can't visit her grandmother in her care home anymore.  And their entire school has moved to online classes. Sacrifices have to be made to keep everyone safe, but there's more to life than rules and scary news reports.  In an effort to find some good in all of this uncertainty, Quinn comes up with an idea that she hopes will bring the entire community together.

Don’t Stand So Close to Me reflects the current life experience of many young people around the world who, due to COVID-19, are unable to attend school in person or see their friends. It offers lessons about understanding the pandemic and concepts such as “exponential growth” and “flattening the curve.” It also instills hope and optimism about the ways our communities have come together to support one another, from a safe distance.
