James and the Giant Peach, Episode 2

Please listen to the reading of James and the Giant Peach.  Ask your parents to listen to it with you. They will love it, too.  This book was first published in 1961, so your parents may have fond memories of this book.  I know I do!

Anyways, this episode has Meryl Streep and Benedict Cumberbatch reading the parts of Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge and they are brilliant!  Meryl Streep changes her voice to sound so cranky that I got goosebumps up my arms listening to her, while Benedict Cumberbatch uses such great facial expressions that I found myself giggling while he read.

Mrs. Voo's Class have Creative Feet

Take a look at how Mrs. Voo's class creatively displayed their feet.
Who knew looking at other people's feet could be so entertaining.

Which shoes would you be wearing right now, if you could choose any? Where would they take you?  What activity would you be doing in them?

If I could choose any shoes to wear it would be my TAP shoes and I would be tapping with the Grade 2 & 3 tappers at Innisfil Central.

Please leave a comment about your imaginative shoe choice.

Make Your Own Video Game

Coding is the language of computers and a coder is someone who can write in this language.

There are many programs out there that make coding fun for kids but coding can also be very frustrating which is why coding also builds problem solving skills and resilience.

If your child is spending too much time on digital technology, put this time to good use.  Try one of these free coding websites:
Scratch (ages 6-12)
Code.org (ages 4-15)
Code Combat (ages 10+)
Code Academy (ages 14+)

Check out the video games that Mrs. San Juan's son made to celebrate May the Fourth Be With You.

Helping Kids Cope

Are your kids having difficulty with social distancing?  As the quarantine for Ontario continues, students are seeing important milestones like graduation being cancelled, spring sports seasons being delayed, time away from their friends and teachers being extended and favourite family summer holidays in jeopardy.  This is a lot for young children and teens to handle.

Parents should be on the look out for signs that their child is struggling like changes in their sleep pattern and eating habits, an increase in their time on digital technology, disinterest in the things they used to enjoy and changes in their mood.

If you are looking for some helpful hints on how to guide your child through these uncertain times, click on the link below to find many useful tools.

May the Fourth Be With You

"May the Fourth be with you." is said every year on May 4th, the unofficial holiday celebrating the Star Wars Franchise.

“May the Fourth be with you.” was first used by Margaret Thatcher's political party to congratulate her on her election on May 4th, 1979, and the saying quickly caught on. However, the first celebration of May 4th took place much later, at the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2001. (daysoftheyear.com)

The first Star Wars Movie came out in 1977.  Have a little math fun today and determine how old people in your family were when the first Star Wars movie was released.  If no one was born yet, figure out how much older the movie is than the members of your family. I was 7 when the movie first came out.  Can you calculate what year I was born?  I have great memories of going to the theatre to see the first three Star Wars movies with my dad.  He was such a Star Wars geek.

Thank you to Jess Longthorne, Teacher Librarian at Allison Union for the Star Wars Choice Board.

Mother's Day Ideas for Students

Mother's Day is next Sunday and this year, more than ever, all Mother's everywhere need to be celebrated.

For mothers with children at home you have added a new role to your many responsibilities.  You are now a home school teacher.  Every mother knows that your beautiful children show you the best and worst of themselves and you may have seen the worst of them during this time of distance learning.

And yet, you have not given up.

You can't give up because this is an unprecedented time in our lives, hopefully to only happen once.  Your children may be confused, scared, off their schedule and a bit unruly.  They need you to instill calm, structure and kindness during this time.  Distance learning offers the opportunity for you to demonstrate this to the people you cherish most in the world; your children.

Mothers who are grandparents must also be remembered at this time.  Their parenting is complete and now they should be able to enjoy being a grandparent. Sadly, this virus is keeping them away from their beloved children and grandchildren.

Unfortunately, this year elementary students will not be coming home with those cute and cherished Mother's Day gifts from school.  Most stores are closed, so purchasing Mother's Day gifts could be difficult.  Besides, moms need a pick-me-up this year.  Why not create something original that tells mom how valuable they are to your family.

Go to this link, to find some great Mother's Day activities that any mom would love to receive.

To all the mothers out there,

Teachers everywhere want to thank you for persevering during this time of distance learning.  We are creating and forwarding the activities but we are counting on the families out there to facilitate the learning at home.  Keep up the good work and do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher when you need help.  Teachers would love to hear from you because we miss our students and miss teaching and learning with them.
